Hi Marcus, I had read your first email to the mailing list, that is why I asked for more information. Just telling us the iMac has Snow Leopard installed on it doesn't mean it can be upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion. Plus if Applications your friend uses are able to be updated to be compatible with Lion or ML. A lot of preparation is required before you can upgrade from Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Make sure to have Backups before you do anything. A bootable backup at least.
