An update to the problem - - 

I installed the Dashboard widget "Mighty Monitor" which shows the same battery 
levels as the Terminal ioreg command.  Hasn't fixed the real problem, but it 
does help in monitoring battery life.    

Next step - get the widget on to the desktop!
