Rod,

I have a variety, a collection, an overload, of mapping on my iPad AIR 2

Pocket Earth with the free maps that show topo lines, but aren’t very
interesting maps and they need a data connection to do things like searching.

Memory Map is my app of choice for off roading.
I have loaded the free Aus Topo map that uses the Geosciences 250k series maps,
and also loaded the Exploroz EO Topo 200k maps which cost money. Both these are
interesting maps that as far as I can recall, function completely away from
data connections. By interesting I mean they have pretty colours, bushland
marked out, plenty of extra layers of data.
I understand you can also load HEMA maps onto Memory Map which will also cost
money.

When I bought the Exploroz maps, I couldn’t buy it from their site, so was
unable to get the buy lots and get a free membership deal. I had to purchase it
from Memory Map. Same price, but no free membership thrown in.

I ran some of these happily on my iPad1 which still functions, but has been
relegated by the faster lighter iPad AIR 2 Retina.

A friend of mine ran Pocket Earth on his ipad Mini for our trip through
Mongolia and Siberia - a great all in one machine that he used to take video,
photos, play his music, watch his movies and do his mapping.

IMHO, it is nice to have the bigger screen of a ipad Mini or full size iPad and
the maps still keep tracking going when you are using the device for something
else. If you already have purchased both devices, then leave one as a dedicated
GPS. Or just use the iPad of your choice.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Tim
