Hi Matt,

Still could be a flakey Firewire 800 port, or perhaps could be a software or 
incorrect setting on the 27-inch iMac Yosemite.
 
Are you using Path Finder 7.6?
Check your PF settings  to make sure you don’t have this checked. 
Click on the gear icon in the bottom left of PF sidebar, Standard checked for 
the sidebar, then scroll down to “Hide Selection” and is “Devices" checked?

I prefer to use the Mac’s Finder.

I’m also a bit perplexed when you mention the external drives are 1GB backup 
external drive & 1.5GB Movie… very small externals for backup & Movies, don’t 
you mean 1.5TB & 1TB drives?
