Hi Neil, thanks very much for the very welcome reply.

I just tried your suggested method of linking the two iMacs together.
(Which is my normal go to method and the one I use first, I use the
smb-gateway when this this doesn’t work. I had tried it multiply times
the other day without any success.)

Anyway for some unknown reason it worked!! And to make things even
better the files that didn’t populate previously are all now showing
   all of their contents!

So problem solved, how I don’t know, but thanks very much for taking
the time to reply. If you hadn’t I wouldn’t have tried it again and I
would still be sending emails from one iMac to the other to transfer
   and store documents.

   Take care.
   Matt

   Hi Matt,
I don't have much idea about the smb-gateway stuff - not a method I use
   - and I have rarely used the ?Server Address in the Connect to Server
method (and that was a long time ago).
So I'm just throwing up a couple of ideas here - and apologies if it is
not really relevant to your situation:
I also have? different machines, running different OSX versions, on my
network and nowadays I always just use the finder to access folders on
   another machine.
First off go to your finder settings and make sure that, in the sidebar
tab - under locations, you have the box for your computer (eg your
   MattiMac2015) ticked.
Then, in a finder window, in the sidebar,go to locations and select
your computer and typically you would see two items: your HD and
   network.
Select network and you should see any other computers also on your
network. Select the computer you want to connect to and take it from
   there.
This may just give you the same result as you are getting with your
   remote volumes access.
With regard to your Desktop & Documents Folders, it strikes me that
these are the folders that you can synch with iCloud drive ? ie
The Desktop & Documents Folders feature of iCloud Drive lets you decide
whether those two folders are stored only on your local Mac's hard
drive, or as part of iCloud Drive and available across all of your
   Apple devices.
So maybe check how you have this set-up across both machines ? I would
have thought that if you have enabled this feature on both machines you
would have no need to go to your other computer since both computers
would keep these folders synched with the folders on iCloud drive?
Anyway, just some thoughts off the top of my head.
   HTH
   Cheers
   Neil

Hi, I have just bought an iMac that is running Monterey 12.7.4 and I am
having problems with file sharing it to another iMac running High
   Sierra 10.13.6.
I have file sharing on on both in System Preferences.
On the Monterey iMac on it says it can be reached and and gives me the
smb - gateway address. When I go to Finder>go>Connect to Server on the
High Sierra iMac, the Monterey iMac smb - gateway address doesn?t show.
   (My other ones do.)
I click Browse and instead of it finding and displaying the smb -
gateway in the Connect to Server window, Server Address, it opens a new
   Network window with :
Remote Volumes> Network>Mac>MattiMac2015 (theMontereyiMac) and and
arrow allowing me to open more files, which if I click on it show me
the HD name and my User Name
But also listed under Remote Volumes is My User name ?Matt?, when I
click on that it lists all the main folders, Applications, Calibre
Library, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Incomplete, Library, Media,
Movies, Music, Pictures, Sites, To be Worked on.
All of them open and show the various sub folders and files EXCEPT:
   Desktop, Documents & Downloads.
Desktop & Documents folders have a small triangle next to their names
but nothing opens when clicking on it, the Downloads folder does not
have the triangle instead it has an arrow in the bottom right hand
   corner.
If anyone is able to let me know how to find the smb - gateway address
via the Server Address in the Connect to Server window that would be
   great.
And if anyone can let me know how to make the Desktop, Documents and
Downloads folder show their contents, (Documents being the priority in
sharing), just as the other are, well at least that would be a
secondary way of connecting the two iMacs if I can?t do it via smb -
   gateway.
   Take care.
