Iranian Women in Evin Prison
Jan 9, 2006
Bahman Aghai Diba PhD International Law - Persian
Journal

The notorious Evin Prison has been an important center
for crimes against the women's rights in Iran. This
prison is mainly designed for men, but it has a
special section for women too. This section was
previously devoted to the political prisoners and most
of its inhabitants were the arrested members of the
MKOs and leftist organizations opposing the regime. A
large number of these arrested women were executed in
the Mass Murders of 1978 in the Iran along with their
male counterparts. This is was one of the rare
occasions that the Islamic-Arabic regime of Iran did
not commit discrimination against women.

There are two units for the women in the Evin Prison:
the unit of solitary confinement which is under the
men's section and situated right next to the foothills
in the furthest north of prison and the public unit
which is closer to the entrance gate of the prison.
When I was in the Evin prison, I could see that the
women were transported to and from their solitary
confinement to the other places (like the office of
the prison) by men who pushed them around with a piece
of stick. I witnessed a few times that the Pasdars
(the revolutionary prison Guards who were mostly
selected from the people who attended the Friday
Prayers in Tehran and other cities) were beating the
women in the process of transportation.

During my years of imprisonment, I came to know at
least tens of cases that the male prison officials
(including the representatives of the Revolutionary
Courts in the Evin Prison, and the heads of various
sections of the prison especially those involved in
the security and operational activities) had sexual
relations with the inmates or had raped the inmates in
order to give them their ordinary rights as prisoners.
This trend if fact was much expanded when the ordinary
prisoners were added to the political prisoners in
Evin (this was in line with a plan that Assadollah
Lajevardi, the Bucher of Evin, had devised to claim
that there was no political prisoner in Iran).
Whenever the news of the rapes and corruptions inside
the women's section leaked out, the revolutionary
authorities put the criminals aside silently and
assigned new hyenas for the jobs.

The Women were under more pressures than men in
prison. They suffered all kinds of mistreatments,
degrading and inhuman punishments and treatments. The
extent of the violation of human rights in the
Iranians prisons entered a completely new stage when
the women's prisons were concerned. Forceful
implementation of the religious rituals, imposing the
outdated laws of the barbaric Arabs against women,
sentencing women in the courts headed by criminal
Mullahs that lacked the least expertise or care for
the women's issues, imposing the rulings of the
religious authorities (which were altogether in favor
of men. In fact the dominant interpretation of Islam
in Iran considers women as domestic animals and
belongings of men. In many cases they do not have even
the rights and privileges of the slaves).

The By-law of Iranian Prisons is an illegal text
custom made by the Butcher of Evin (Lajevardi was the
Head of Iran Prisons Organization for several years
and he had stationed the Prisons Organization inside
his beloved place: Evin Prison) and it has nothing in
particular about the regulations and rights of the
female prisoners. Lajevardi had ordered this text
personally and he had instructed Ayatollah Yazdi (the
Butcher of Evin was so aware of the dark secrets of
these Mullahs that he treated Ayatollah Yazdi, the
Head of Iranian Judiciary, as his pet snake) to sign
it, while both of them did not have the legal capacity
to do so. It was an important piece of law that should
have passed in the Majles at least.

The Women's section of the Evin Prison at the moment,
like many other prisons of Iran, is a center for
promotion corruption, addiction, and prostitution. The
corruption mafia recruits new "flesh" for the market
constantly through the agents stationed in prisons.
They offer calculated protection for the vulnerable
women in the prison and lure them to the rings of
prostitution waiting for them outside the prison. The
prostitution rings of the prisons are even active in
sending the victims to other countries for the same
services.

The staff of the Evin prison for the women's section
is almost entirely men. The reason is that few women
are ready to accept such jobs and apart from the
female family members of the prison staff there are
few other people who work there. These persons do not
have any training in the issues of criminal justice,
management and administration of the judicial
institutions, administration of the prisons,
classification of the prisoners and other forms of
sciences and arts related to the incarcerations. Most
of them are illiterate. The female staff of the
prisons does not have any social workers. In rare
cases that they have such persons they are male social
workers are usually part of the gang of raping, and
violating the rights of the inmates. After all, in a
society that does not observe the rights of the people
who are outside prison (and at least temporary are
assumed to be innocent), who cares about the rights of
the ill-starred men and women who happen to witness
the system of Islamic justice so much propagated by
the corrupt and demagogue figures in the Judicial
system of Iran. (They claim that other countries
should learn from them hoe to run the prisons!).

I look forward for the day that the Islamic-Arabic
regime of Iran collapses and the Evin Prison is turned
into the museum of the violation of human rights and
crimes against humanity.
