Sunday, 13, August, 2006 (19, Rajab, 1427) Unemployment Among Women Abid Khazindar . Al-Riyadh Out of eight million Saudi women, the number of working women is only 300,000. There are many signs indicating that the remaining women are unemployed. A local newspaper recently mentioned that more than 100,000 university and college graduates had applied for the same 5,000 jobs. At the beginning of August, Al-Riyadh newspaper published a story saying that students with GPAs less than 93 percent were turned away from places at King Saud University. Meanwhile, four percent of high school graduates in Jeddah had not been given places at King Abdul Aziz University. No matter what, the number of youngsters who haven't had any luck gaining university places or jobs in the government sector will be added to the ever-increasing number of unemployed in the country. This number is increasing everyday especially since the doors that were opened for women in order to provide them with 10,000 jobs were again closed. Only God knows when will they be open again. Another newspaper recently said that the General Organization for Technical Education and Vocational Training (GOTEVOT) had admitted 1,500 women in Jeddah to train them in different professions that the job market needs. The institution signed contracts with 17 specialized institutions under the supervision of its women's section. This is the first time that they are training women on how to model and sell products, perform reception and secretarial tasks and how to keep accounts, etc. What about other regions in the Kingdom? Why can't we start a program similar to the one GOTEVOT initiated in Jeddah? Most importantly, is there a possibility to hire trainees who are trained for jobs that they can't work in at present time? Unfortunately, there are many questions that remain unanswered regarding this issue. A solution can only be found if the responsible authorities fight and support GOTEVOT's decisions without any hesitation or delay.
