Dari beberapa milis yang saya ikuti dan menayangkan berita ini, saya amati rantai penyampaian berita adalah sebagai berikut:
- koran Saudi (tidak disebutkan namanya) - the Nations, Pakistan (dalam bahasa Inggris), tidak menyebutkan nama koran Saudi yang dia kutip (http://www.nation.com.pk/daily/june-2006/15/index12.php) - terjemahan bahasa Indonesia (dari The Nations) mulai muncul di milis2 (partai-islam@, keluarga-sejahtera@, Muhammadiyah_Society@, ....) - hidayatullah.com, Rabu, 09 Agustus 2006 (http://www.hidayatullah.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3444&Itemid=66) - pos kota, seperti yang diforward pak HMNA semenjak dikirim ke milis2, terlontar pertanyaan atas kebenaran berita tersebut, karena - tidak ada media selain The Nations yang memuatnya, sekalipun The Nations ataupun koran Saudi tersebut berusaha meyakinkan pembaca dengan teori konspirasi pemerintah Denmark menyembunyikan kejadian tersebut. Mengingat Jylland Posten media besar di Denmark dan sedang dalam sorotan, kematian misterius editornya tentunya sangat sulit disembunyikan begitu saja. - isi berita. The Nations/koran Saudi tanpa nama menyebut nama editornya Eliott Back, tetapi sekaligus menyebutkan dia hanyalah mahasiswa sebuah universitas di Amerika. Sedangkan editor budaya Jylland Posten adalah Fleming Rose, yang sejak kasus kartun itu namanya kondang di mana-mana memberikan wawancara dan tulisan-tulisan klarifikasi di berbagai media lainnya. - keraguan sebenarnya terbersit dari berita the Nations tersebut, ditambah lagi dengan penjudulan oleh hidayatullah.com "Editor Surat Kabar 'Jyllands Posten' Mati Terbakar?" (tekanan pada tanda tanya) - metoda penyebaran berita "Teks-teks pesan serta email yang berisi berita bahwa kartunis telah terbakar hidup-hidup telah disebarkan sejak Selasa, untuk menguatkan laporan ini." (hidayatullah.com) Ciri-ciri penyebaran hoax menggunakan modus seperti ini. Apalagi kalau versi the Nations berbeda dengan versi Hidayatullah dan versi Pos Kota, berarti ada penambahan atau pengurangan di rantai berita. Ini bukan caranya untuk "menguatkan" laporan. Dengan banyaknya keraguan seperti ini, seharusnya pihak pembawa berita yang meyakinkan pembaca bahwa laporan ini bukan hoax, bukannya menuntut pembaca untuk membuktikan ini adalah hoax.
