Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi was born on September, 13, 1958
at Gontor, Indonesia. He got his secondary education
in a famous religious education institution Ma'had
al-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyyah al-Hadithah, Gontor, East
Jawa Indonesia. While he devoted his time for teaching
he pursued his undergraduate studies at Institute of
Education Darussalam, from which he obtained his BA on
Islamic education in 1982. In 1984 he was sent by the
Institute to Pakistan to carry on his study and there
he got his MA in Education at the University of the
Punjab, Pakistan in 1986. His MA thesis on
"Al-Ghazzali Thought on Education" was published by
Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in
1990. After completing his MA he again devoted his
career in teaching at the Institute of Islamic Studies
Darussalam, Gontor, Indonesia until 1996, during which
he was appointed as the Deputy Rector of student
affair and at the same time entrusted to tackle the
research center of the institute. Even though he
dedicated his career as teacher and lecturer, he was
also involved in various academic activities at
national level. He had presented papers on Islamic
thought in various national seminars and conference.
He is a staff member Jaringan Informasi Pengkajian
Islam (Information Network for Islamic Studies-INIS),
founded in 1989 in Jakarta. In 1996 he got British
Chevening Awards for post-graduate studies at the
University of Birmingham, where he successfully
completed his thesis on Ibn Taymiyyah Critique of
Philosophy and got his MPhil degree. Following his
completion of his M.Phil in 1998, he pursue his study
for his PhD degree at International Institute of
Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) Kuala Lumpur,
under the guidance and supervision of Prof. Syed
Muhammad Naquib al-Attas. Now he is trying to refute
the Western misconception of al-Ghazzali's thought in
his thesis on Al-Ghazzali's Causality, With Reference
to His Interpretation of Reality and Knowledge. His
area of specialization at INSIST, other than Islamic
theology and philosophy is the framework of Islamic thought.
