#2173: single player Beta 6: game freezes when manufacturing

I'm experiencing a freeze in the Beta 6 mission ('Destroy Reactor'): every
time I want to enter Manufacturing mode (either by clicking the
Manufacturing icon, or by pressing F1, or by selecting a factory), the
game freezes to a complete halt, and I have to shut the game via Windows
task manager. Very frustrating.
I can start the mission, no problem, I can send the away team and start
the remote battle. No problem as long as I keep away from manufacturing
units. Doesn't matter whether I re-start the same mission all over via
AutoSave, or use a save game from during the mission, or use a save game
from shortly before the end of the previous mission.
I'm running the game mainly on Windows Vista SP1, on a Fujitsu/Siemens
Amilo desktop with all Windows updates and most recent video card drivers
applied. Also tried the same on WinXP pro SP3 (both on my netbook and on
another computer), same problem recurs, which makes me pretty sure it's
not hardware related. Also, I was running the 2.3.3 PortableApps version
of the game, but after installing the 2.3.4 version (and using the same
save game from my PortableApps version) I encountered the freeze all the
same.
Any ideas on how to circumvent this freeze? I'm eager to continue the SP
campaign :) Big TIA!
