There are others, like James, that can be more assistance in regards
to XMPP.  A couple of quick points though.  You don't need XMPP set up
to use wave as an internal service.  XMPP is only used for Federation,
so if your wave server is configured correctly you should be able to
connect to it locally even if OpenFire is not started. There is no
default web client that will show when you go to wave.example.com.
Have you tried running run-client.sh after your wave server starts?
The other option for a client is QWave at http://code.google.com/p/qwaveclient/
.  While there is currently no released web based client for FedOne as
seen on wave.google.com or wavesandbox.com, Torben Weis (creator of
QWave) is working on one last I checked.
