Today while I was driving the kids home from Grandma's, they were watching a
Pinky and the Brain episode entitled "Brain's Song" (a parody of "Brian's
Song.") In this episode, the duo plans to make a tear-jerker of a movie, so
they start by getting some books on acting. When the Melanie Griffith tome
"How I Act Good" proves unhelpful, Pinky suggests they read Jim Nabors'
"Surprise, Surprise, I'm a-Actin'." In another Pinky and the Brain episode
(Plan Brain from Outer Space), they try to sneak into Area 51 in Roswell,
and Gomer is on guard duty at the gate.

Pinky and the Brain was, of course, a spin-off of my other favorite cartoon,
Animaniacs. Someone at Warner Bros. was obviously a big fan of Don Knotts,
who appears onscreen as Barney Fife in cartoon form (but not voiced by Don
Knotts) in two Animaniacs episodes. Don Knotts is also mentioned, but not
seen, in many other episodes of Animaniacs. He seems to have been Wakko's
idol.
