I don't have a definitive answer, but I imagine the prop department looked
at real sheriff's insignia from that day and copied them, adding the name
"Mayberry." BTW, the sheriff's shirt badge does have six points, as Steve
correctly pointed out, but in the center of the badge is a smaller star,
which has only five points.

While I'm on the subject, does anyone know why the squad car's license plate
is JL-327? Well, I'm about to tell you. Back in the late 1950s, an
automotive parts company put out a large magazine ad depicting real license
plates from every state. The prop department needed an example of what a
real North Carolina license plate looked like (they wanted to get the
coloring and the numbers/letters combination just right), so when they made
up the tags for the squad car they used the NC plate in that ad as their
example, and the number of that tag was JL-327. Credit goes to Jack
Fellenzer for discovering this bit of trivia.
