On the back page of the recent issue of 'American History'(February 2007)
magazine is a photograph of the harness contraption that Barney wore to
increase his height to pass the physical requirements test of sheriff's
deputies.
The 1923 photograph depicts the device being used by Dr. Lyman F. Kebler, head
of the Office of Special Collaborative Investigations, which later became the
Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Kebler's job was to investigate fraudulent
medicines and contraptions that sellers were trying to distribute through
the U.S. Mail. The seller of the harness contraption claimed that the device
could increase one's height by 2 to 6 inches. And just think, Don Knotts was
on
the verge of conception in Morgantown, West Virginia when this photograph
was taken.
