Don't forget, "Man in a Hurry" was one of his earliest episodes (it was the first episode with Gomer to be filmed, however "The Bank Job" aired first). "Gomer the House Guest" aired about 10 months later, so Gomer obviously learned a great deal from Wally in those ten months. Or, maybe Learn-a-Month magazine had a special issue on auto repair.
On Gomer Pyle - USMC, Gomer was still an expert mechanic, making all sorts of repairs to many different cars in various episodes. In one episode, he repairs a truck which belongs to a poor family trying to make it out West, then later he blows up the same truck with a "bazooker."
