The year was 1940 ,in Chicago Ill.we had a real Sarah, although we did not
really know her name, we had a candlestick phone and a square black box on
the wall which had a coin slot in it. When we wanted to make a call,we would
pick up the ear piece and the voice would say " operator, number please". we
would then tell her the number we were trying to call , and the the operator
would say "please deposit five cents",and then we would put a nickel or a
slug into the coin slot on the box. She could tell by the sound of the ding
,how much was deposited. The slugs were nickel size and were purchased from
the phone company.
Once a month a man from the phone company would come to our house,he would
have a very large ring of keys, may be a hundred. he would unlock the black
box and empty the contents on our table and then proceed to count and wrap
the coins in rolls,he was amazingly adept at it. When he was finished
counting and rolling ,we would buy back the slugs from him and leave them on
top of the black box so that you would have them handy for the next call.
Our phone number was 0452 and later changed to "Armatige 0452". We also had
a party line as privet lines were scarce and more expensive.

Every time I see Andy's office phone the memories jump up so clear...But
what is strange is that I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast
today.

God Bless All
