I think the church most likely would?have been exempt from the tax. This was
probably just an oversight....

Often wondered why Aunt Bee included state tax in the price of choir robes.
At least here in Wisconsin churches are exempt from paying state taxes. All
they need to do is apply for a sales tax exempt number. But maybe things
are different in North Carolina. Any tax experts out there who can answer
this for me?

"Dewey, I'm going for the most obvious answer -- because it was FUNNY!!
;-) And maybe to impress Gomer."

That's one of my favorite episodes! The look on Gomer's face when Barney
starts his Dr voice is so great. Then I really fall apart when Gomer
decides to disguise his voice after having already spoke.

One of my all-time teary moments and it never fails to happen is when Clara
gives up her blue ribbon for the rose to Aunt Bee; such an unselfish act in
the name if true friendship just always leaves me in awe.

>>>Back to the story. Andy lost his right to take Elly out, so Aunt Bee pushes
him to ask for forgiveness but the problem is she already has a date with
Barney. Au
nt Bee suggest Andy use his authority to sway Barney to give up his
date with Elly and it works.

That kind of erks me as being a bit underhanded and treating a friend as though
hes a bit dumb. ( Did Barney say he was on the force for 1.5 years without an
arrest? )

He knows Barneys dedication to law enforcement duties and uses that against
Barney to get what he wants; even though he didnt have the right to have a date
with Elly to begin with.<<<

Holland, I can't say I *like* what Andy did in this episode, but we do need to
keep in mind that this occurred early in the series -- in fact, early in the
first season -- before Andy's character was fully realized. At this time, he
was also playing more of a comic role, and he affected a heavy southern accent.

Andy's character developed over time, and though he was never above being a bit
deceptive (in a harmless way), it was usually to help out someone else and not
for his own advantage. This early episode was an exception.

I am headed to Mount Airy tomorrow for 4 wonderful days. I'm thinking about
getting a corner room at the Y...and maybe I can find a machine to get my
picture taken in...I sure hope it doesn't turn all brown!
Hope everyone has a great weekend!!

In addition to the scene of Ben Weaver standing on the crate outside the
jail singing " Away in a Manger", on the first episode where Aunt Bea is
leaving and Opie
goes running out to the truck and cries and says he doesn't
want Aunt Bea to leave. Opie asks Andy what will she do? She doesn't know
how to do anything, can't fish or play ball etc. Those are the 2 scenes
that can always make me puddle up and cry.

The McBeevey episode where Opie asks his pa about believing him. Poor sad Opie.
This scene always gets me.

My apologies: I've been delinquent in keeping up lately (you know, "life
happens") - but, if this story could be re-posted, or if I could be told
where to find it, I would really appreciate it. Obviously, I'm a fan of
Andy, and I was (still am) of Paul. Thanks!

For those of you who love 'Mayberry R.F.D.' (the spin-off of TAGS), I'd
suggest contacting Warner Brothers with your interest in having the series on
DVD. If they get enough inquiries, I'm sure they will release it.

Sorry if I teased anyone
