Actually there were 2 female deputies in Mayberry. During the only Christmas episode TAGS ever made, Andy swore in a whole bunch of extra deputies to 'guard' the Muggins family. These were Aunt Bee, Ellie, and of course Opie. I've seen Will Wright in quite a few shows, but to me this was by far his best performance.
