I think it was always understood that Goober took Sundays off but would come in for emergencies. An out of towner stranded under a deadline would certainly qualify as an emergency. And remember, Goober was out on his boat and there were no cell phones in 1962 or Sarah's Mayberry. My memories of growing up in the south saw everything shut down on Sundays--even supermarkets in some areas!--but service stations, they stayed open. I specifically remembered going to my grandmother's house and stopping on the way for gas, Cokes and a few other things, and we usually stayed for a little while because the Texaco on Green Valley Road or wherever else we stopped, was the only thing open. Then again, even now, there aren't too many places open for service on Sundays, not where I live.
