Our local station in Nashville had a 9 hour TAGS Marathon to celebrate the 50th
Anniversary last Sunday and had a good mix of shows. I wondered if each of us
got to be program director and put together a 4 hour special, which shows would
you air and why?
My selections try to highlight the various characters and writers at their best:
1. The New Housekeeper – first episode and great introduction of the
characters. "You need me!"
2. Goober and the Art of Love - George Lindsey has developed Goober’s character
into a classic. "Your hair is drippin'."
3. Mountain Wedding – The Darlings and Ernest T. Bass in one show – a winning
combination. The snoring scene is comedy genius that most people have not seen.
4. Opie the Birdman – to honor writer Harvey Bulluck and show just how good an
actor Ronny Howard is. "But don't the trees seem full?"
5. Aunt Bee's Medicine Man – Francis Bavier is even funnier when she is tiddly.
"Toot toot Tootsie, don't cry..."
6. Dogs Dogs Dogs – shows a full range of Don Knotts’ acting abilities and his
understanding of the character Barney Fife "Boy giraffes are selfish."
7. Convicts at Large – Howard McNear’s last episode before his stroke and my
personal favorite with some of the funniest dialog "You're a treasure!"
8. Man in a Hurry – epitomizes what Mayberry and life in a small southern town
is all about "I wonder what causes that?"
It is not easy picking just eight – I’ll probably need to program another
marathon before October 3, 2010 so I can pick a fresh batch. I'd need to make
mine a 4-1/2 hr special so I could show uncut episodes and still air
commercials to pay the bills.
I look forward to seeing what others would like to program.
Jeff
