I believe that same man who patted Opie on the head in reference to "would
you like to have a baby?" was the same man who was once pictured living
across the street from either Helen or Andy when she remarked that he was
staring while they were on the porch. But I don't remember if he had a cane
in that episode. He might have also been the man who Aunt Bee encouraged to
come out and vote by promising him a ride with a pretty lady to the
precinct; my memory escapes me at the moment for sure but I believe that
gentleman was on a cane too.
