I heard George Spence (Frank the Finance in "Guest in the House") mentioned the name Joe Layton (Con man/Intercontinental News in "Crime-free Mayberry") when he was telling a story about working with Andy in "The Lost Colony" so that character's name came from Andy's theater work pre-TAGS. I don't think the original Joe Layton was another actor, but someone involved in the production of "The Lost Colony."
