I think the more likely explanation for that colorful plaid shirt was that the
show was then being shot in color. Andy was in uniform in nearly every episode,
and Aunt Bee, while always well dressed and perfectly groomed, didn't exactly
wear colorful dresses. I expect the costume department therefore concentrated
on having Opie dress in brighter colors.
