I was up in my hometown area earlier this week with my daughter and had a brief
visit with Barney Fife. Well, not in person--it was a lifesize cut-out picture
attached to the back of an outdoor bench, but it was the best I could do. We
were in Clay City, Indiana, a small town whose official motto is "Mayberry of
the Midwest." They have it on all their signs going in and out of town. It is
a very Mayberry-like town, and most of the people there have embraced the
Mayberry identity. One Clay City native opened a food stand a few years back
called the Mayberry Malt Shop. Abigail and I sampled items from their
extensive ice cream menu, but they also have other food. Menu items are named
after Mayberry residents (Howard's Hamburgers, Otis's Ice Cream, etc.), and
they have several Mayberry tin signs on display, as well as the big Barney
cut-out. The town also has a Mayberry squad car that is usually on display at
the visitor's center nearby. Clay City is more off the beaten path, not close
to a big city like Danville (with its Mayberry Café) is, but if you are ever in
the area (approximately 30 miles southeast of Terre Haute), I'd encourage you
to stop in!
