Short Wave Radio

I'm not a trained noticer, but I did see in today's episode with Jamie 
Farr and the  gypsies who put the weather curse on Mayberry, that the 
short wave radio that Goober brought into the sheriff's office and  was 
given to Andy at the end of the show was immediately turned on and it 
worked, giving the rain forecast without being plugged in. It got me to 
wonderin if they had portable short wave radios back in the 60's ? I 
just can't remember everything from that far back. The Gollywobbler
