Just watched an episode of "The Rifleman" from 1959 and saw Denver Pyle (Briscoe Darling) appearing as an Irish immigrant who was sort of an "Otis". He sobered up and was hired by Chuck Connors to help at the ranch - unfortunately, he was mistakenly killed by the bad guys. He apparently appeared in 5 "Rifleman" episodes, which I believe is close to his total number of appearances on TAGS.
One more comment - the close father/son relationship of Lucas and Mark in "The Rifleman" closely mirrors the close relationship of Andy and Opie in TAGS - very nice to see.
