I haven't checked this out, but I was thinking that the first time Barney spoke about being a trained noticer was in the season one episode "Andy the Matchmaker" where Andy is trying to get Barney to take out Miss Rosemary. Barney tells her he notices that she wears a different shirtwaist to church every Sunday, or something like that. When Miss Rosemary expresses surprise, Barney replies that he is a trained noticer. I'll have to check out that episode to make sure, but I think that's right.
