In the late 50's and early 60's, there was a lot of nuclear testing, releasing radioactive material in the atmosphere. Some of this stuff settled in pastures where cows grazed, and their milk became contaminated. This happened with bodies of water, rivers, etc. too and people near the testing sites could end up drinking contaminated water.
