If your friend cannot open a zip file with Stuffit this may be explained as follows:
Possibly your friend is working with an ancient version of Stuffit Expander which does not open zip files. She can update to the newest version at the URL supplied by Franni (below)
Your friend's helper app is not set up to automatically send zip files to Stuffit for opening. If she has a recent version of Stuffit but when she double clicks on the zip file Stuffit doesn't automatically start to open it, then this is probably the case.
Two fixes for this second issue are
1 Set up her helper app to have Stuffit handle her zip files
2 Open Stuffit and use the top menu bar to open the zip file from within Stuffit
