The viruses get named by whoever discovers them first. The
first incarnation of Sobig (Sobig.A) always came from the
email address "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", so that may be the origin of
the word "big".

The viruses retain their names when they are based on
similar code - that is, Sobig.F is still the same basic
program as Sobig.A, though it has gotten more sophisticated
along the way.

Sobig itself is probably the work of spammers who want to
create open relays for their mail. Each version of Sobig has
an expiration date, but each sets up a back door or trojan
on an infected machine and then basically waits for further
instructions. In the end, the goal seems to be to hijack
home computers to send out untraceable spam - much of which
IS or will be pornographic, of course.
