The concept is laid out at (sorry for the wrap)http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=00048144-10D2-1C70-84A9809EC588EF21
The quick answer, from the article, is "The Semantic Web is not a separate Web but an extension of the current one, in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation." In this conceptualization, xml provides the framework within which data is stored. RDF (Resource Definition Framework) provide the data content. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a first step in the direction of the semantic web. It combines the structure of xml with the "triples" of rdf. Mostly its used for news summmaries but can also be used for things like blog summaries. The items are like annotated citations: summary, location, date. We're obviously a ways from a full development of such a web and for now xml is, as you point out, now largely a "wrapper" language but it has far more potential and intent. drew ____ • The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM • ____ To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To set a personal password send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the words: "set WDVLTALK pw=yourpassword" in the body of the email.
