well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in
cooperation."

In this conceptualization, xml provides the framework within which data is
stored. RDF (Resource Definition Framework) provide the data content.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a first step in the direction of the
semantic web. It combines the structure of xml with the "triples" of rdf.
Mostly its used for news summmaries but can also be used for things like
blog summaries. The items are like annotated citations: summary, location,
date.

We're obviously a ways from a full development of such a web and for now
xml is, as you point out, now largely a "wrapper" language but it has far
more potential and intent.
