David, It was all very strange. But I had been naughty about updating M$'s creaky new whizz-bang collaXpe OS. And after putting all that on and restarting it was all hunky-dorey.

Drop to a command line (for Windoze, click Start, click Run, then type 'command' (or 'cmd' for 2000/XP), then press enter. Type: ping www.google.com (try a couple of others if you want). If it says something similar to 'PING www.google.akadns.net (66.102.11.99)', then shows packets being received, your DNS is working.
