John, skEdit[1] comes well recommended. It's not free but close to it at $20. There's also SubEthaEdit[2], which has the added advantages of having a very small footprint and "collabrative document editing" (in case you do pair programming). It's free for non-commercial use, $35 for commercial. If it really, absolutely must be free, I'd look into the *nix ports to OSX. Maybe XEmacs (GUI version of Emacs)[3]... it can definitely do what you want... now, will it be a pain in the ass to set up? probably.
