I rarely configure an Apache server so I'm not the best one to ask. I always end up consulting the docs. Maybe someone else knows off the top of their head but I do remember it was easy enough to find in the Apache documentation when I set up my Mac.
Everything I see there refers to FrontPage Server Extensions and is not part of the basic htaccess set-up. That much I do know. Since you are not using FrontPage if you have the option to turn off the FPSE in your control panel I'd suggest you do it. That will make it easier to edit your htaccess file. Cheryl D.
