Assuming your are running XP Pro, in My Computer under Tools go to folder options from the View tab scroll down to the very last option and remove the checkmark from "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)", apply and then at the top apply to all folders.
Next go to the level above the folder holding all those docs. Right click under properties, remove the mark in the read only box and apply. You should get a message that this will change the settings on all files. Okay and you should be able to work on the files. Note that if you do not turn off simple file sharing sometimes Windows will see the file as locked when it shouldn't be. Right pain in the ... , it is.
