Tom, Thanks for this; I'm going to store it because I may well be moving in that direction. Of course I had no sooner sent the email than I remembered that precise coding (or rather where it was). I agree generally that it is rude to have background playing, but this will be a response to clicking on a link, so the user's intent is to hear the file. It is rather elegant answer to a set of difficulties I was having and involves pages which only play the audio and are not accessed for anything else.
I had thought things were very quiet. I now know why. I have just has a landslide of mails downloaded from this address covering the past day or so; the odd thing is they are not coming down in order of time received on the server (as is usual) so I reckon my POP3 has had a problem or two! Even so wdvl-talk seems quiet.
