Peter,

I use an older version of Eudora - version 4.2.2 to be exact - and have that happen occasionally, myself. That being said, I don't think it is a 'Eudora' problem. When it happens with me, attempting to contact whichever of my domains generate the error via FTP usually fails, too.

I think it is either network glitches, or, in my case, a flaky wireless card (I occasionally lose the connection between my computer and router.) Usually, if I wait ten or fifteen minutes after a failed FTP attempt, it will have worked itself out (maintenance?). When it doesn't, I put in a trouble ticket to my host and get it resolved.

I know my wireless card is choking periodically because it sometimes gives me a blue screen error on reboot pointing to the PRISM (wireless card) driver. When I get aggravated enough at it, I'll pull the cover and swap it with a new one, but it isn't happening often enough to merit that just yet.

Cheers,
Tom

Tom, as a fellow Eudora user have you any thoughts on this problem I'm having?

I'm using a 2Mbit broadband connection. Most oft he time email comes through regularly (I have set to check every 30 minutes) but for no obvious reason from time to time - most often if I've been away from the machine - I find messages against each of the "Personalities" to say 'Error getting network address for "ranworth.co.uk" (or whichever) Cause: host not found [11001].

If it can find it when I'm there and taking no notice of it, why can't it find it when I go to make coffee or have lunch or am sleeping and am still taking no notice?

Any thoughts as to what might be doing this?

OK, OK so the PC's feeling neglected - but apart from that? LOL

That was probably bounced back to you from one of the WDVL subscribers' mail server, as I received both from the list. I'm beginning to see more and more of this myself. At first, I thought it was my own domains that were being blocked.

The last block message I received was from an aweber mail server. It was pretty clear and indicated that the server being blocked was a RoadRunner server. My ISP is wireless, and probably renting bandwidth from RR to resell.

Going into Eudora's mail settings for the accounts being blocked, I changed them to use my own domains' mail servers (on two different hosting companies) and tried again. They went through! So, it wasn't my domains being blocked, but my ENTIRE ISP!!

If the people designing and using these draconian filters don't learn to do a better job of filtering out just the offenders instead of blocking the entire highway the offender used, this could get bad. Some ISP's won't let users use their own mail servers calling the practice 'relaying' - a tactic used by many spammers. Blocking 'legitimate' relaying, where username/password authentication is used, is like throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
