Joseph have you considered getting Thunderbird to simply replace OE? It's far more robust and by adding either Sunbird or Lightning you get a fine calendar system as well. Thunderbird has a nice baysian anti-spam system which learns quickly. The interface will look familiar but easier to navigate. Setup is simple.
