Yarko, thanks for your useful reply. Yes, you are correct, this is
essentially a python question, not a web2py question. What's so
wonderful about web2py is how seamlessly and transparently integrated
it can *appear* to be with python and the web. However, the correct
syntax can be nuanced, like in this case, so the clearer a mental
model one develops regarding the entire system, the more directly one
can speak to what's under the hood of both python and web2py -- using
precise computer science terminology. Thank you all for your responses
