My Bootstrap custom widget address exactly those problems have a look at the code... It is pretty easy to write web2py custom widget and I think we don't do enough of them as community (including me :)
The only dependency you get with my typeahead integration widget is typeahead bootstrap (that is include in web2py anyway in bootstrap.js) and jQuery, no bloated jQuery UI that is not working pretty well beside bootstrap. I get conflict with some jQuery UI things and bootstrap already, so I tend to migrate everything on bootstrap since it seems the future... jQuery UI never be ship as part of web2py and bootstrap do, so...
