SELECT name FROM person It seems to me that db().select(db.person.name) is the closest you can get. db(db.person).select(db.person.name) is a shortcut for db(db.person.id > 0).select(db.person.name), which translates to "SELECT name FROM person WHERE person.id > 0", which is not quite the same as the above SQL statement.
