The extra shared memory allows PostgreSQL to cache more and perform better. It's mostly for production servers. It shouldn't have any adverse effects on the Mac. If it's the same setting I'm thinking of, then all it does is increase the amount of shared ram a single application can use. If it does mess anything up, then just delete the /etc/sysctl.conf file and when you reboot, the file will be rebuilt by the Mac to its default settings automatically.
