[web2py] is there an easier way to do subtotals/grouping?

Greetings,

I am building a report that will have N sections that will each need to 
be subtotaled. What I'm doing now is not pretty...

Does anyone have a pattern I can copy for this?

Also, is it "normal" for a lot of grunt work to be in the view, or am I 
working at the wrong layers?
