I'm also using memcache to store the session as follows:

from gluon.contrib.gae_memcache import MemcacheClient
from gluon.contrib.memdb import MEMDB
cache.memcache = MemcacheClient(request)
cache.ram = cache.disk = cache.memcache

session.connect(request,response,MEMDB(cache.memcache))
