OK, I've tried all possible combinations of the settings and no joy so far. I guess that I'm just not one of the lucky ones. There are heaps of cameras based on this chipset and I guess they don't all do things the same way. Still, it feels like it was quite close.. they gray screen and lack of communication errors was reassuring. I guess I'll sell it again and try something different.
BTW, tested on both x86 and ppc, under Mac OS X 10.4.8.
