It sounds like the macam application works fine; i.e., your hardware
setup is OK.
When there is a black image with writing, that is an error message; I
would guess
that in this case some other application is using the camera (did you
forget to quit
the macam application?) Only one application can use the camera at a
time.
I like to test the installation of the driver by using HackTVCarbon,
it is about the simplest program to use to verify driver installation.
