I just made a clean install on my local pc using the instructions in:

2. Installation
   2.1 Quick start
...

This seems to work well, I've had no problems and I can login with
webical:webical. Did you follow these as well or did you alter something in
any way to the setup? If so, could you describe what is different in your
setup? As in:
- the tomcat installation
- the mysql location
- database configuration
- etc

I think the problem is in the connection with mysql from within the servlet
container. The database driver is loaded (otherwise you would get another
error), but the connection with the database fails. This is probably due to
faulty configuration in META-INF/context.xml. Check the settings there to
see if they match your database setup. Another possibility is a firewall
issue  although you'd probably get a connection refused exception or
something like that.
