By the way, I fully expect to be overruled (outvoted?) here. Unfortunately, that bug is degenerating into as complicated a discussion as the downstream bug that started this discussion. Many folks seem to have thought carefully about this issue. The main problem is that none of the solutions are that great, but the cost of doing nothing is even higher.
