Making an open-source browser is time consuming because users have tons of expectations. I suggest you to join an existing project to enjoy the leverage of the number of people. I think it is also a better opportunity to learn. If you are targeting KDE, I suggest you to join the Rekonq project. For a general, multiplatform browser, Arora is a good start.
