There is no way I'd call  "idiomatic". You need to specify on-query
for datagrid and on-add-item, on-delete-item for gridedit
(plus specialize dataedit-on-drilldown).

I can easily help you with this as I do it all the time.

We should factor out a basic gridedit that doesn't know anything about
stores
and then build one with stores as data source on top of it.
